Triple 8's and Amplification

I am considering a T8 front setup (LCR) and am thinking about pairing those with an Emotiva XPA-5, using a pair of Slanted 8's for rear channel duty. (http://www.emotiva.com/xpa5.shtm)

I am not sure how this calculation works, but according to these two calculators I should be able to power the T8's at reference 80db, with 30db of headroom with something less than the 350 watts at 4ohms at 13.5 feet.

http://myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.html

http://6072m.net/Power_AllegroSound.html

What formula I should use to calculate this manually?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the XPA-5 and whether it will provide ample overhead using the T8's at 13.5ft?

Cheers,

Leffe67

Forum: Home Theater

Never Before seen, inside Triple 12HT

One of the reasons the Triple 12HT weighs so much is the 22lbs woofers

5 1/2 inches thick of acoustic damping cotton plus acoustic damping foam.

Sealed midrange chamber so tiny only the coaxial's basket fits inside.

Forum: Home Theater

Gowler/Triple 8 Review from a club/mobile DJ

So, I had been introduced to the growlers in 2007 by Jeff when he was still making them in his house! I was in the market for some sub that could give me some good low end as im a dj (club and mobile) and my rig had to be enough to support crowds of 200-500 people at any function I spin at (wedding, private parties, etc.) and it had to have an impressive sound. Being the anal person that I am, my system had to be crisp and clear on the vocals, have chest-pounding CLEAN bass and be somewhat compact as I usually setup most gigs by myself. I play a lot of hip-hop, reggae and house hence you see the reason for my needs.

Anyway, after purchasing some double 18 subs made by Yamahas SW218 (I think thats the model), I hear of JTR and the GROWLER and was interested to know how a 12 inch horn loaded sub was known for keeping up with bigger 18 subs. After hearing ONE growler in Jeffs houseI was simply amazed and KNEW that I needed two more. The bass response was soooo CLEAN. It sounded like some home theater bass that kept on getin louder the more you turned it up. And it just kept on louder even when underpowered!! Needless to say, I was SOLD! I got rid of the Yamahas INSTANTLY and bought two growlers! SOUND, POWER and the COMPACT design were all the qualities I needed. And I found them in these 2 little boxes. I ran a crown XTI 4000 bridged on them crossed over @ 100Hz and the did thump pretty good but I was looking for MORE bass! So I said F it and decided to get 2 more growlers! I bought two qsc plx 3002 amps and bridged them as well into the 4 growlers and boy was I ROCKIN. BUT, I thought I was rockin until Jeff told me to center cluster them if possible and let him know what I thought. At the time I was pretty much a sound noob (still think I am..lol) so I had a gig with a big dancefloor and decided to do it! When I first turned it up low, I think my heart skipped a beat to hear the DEEP BASS coming from these 4 little boxes and my signal lights where barely blinking. When the party got going, BOY oh BOY was I happy about the investment I made in the Growler speaker! Many times I played a song a lil longer than usual to walk out to the danefloor to hear what the crowd was experiencing! I mean they threw sooo far and it could be felt in your chest! Comments I heard from the crowd were, Man, those subs u got a THUMPIN HARD.those 18s rt?? NOPE.12s (I replied) hehe.Never again would I split these subs up! LOL. I then sold the PLX 3002 amps and bout a QSC PL 6.0 II and it was all she wrote for the subs on my system! A PROUD owner of JTR speakers I was!! BUT, it didnt stop there.

After being soo damn broke after buying 4 growlers and a PL 6.0 II (but LOVING the outcome) I was using some old JBL SR 4738 speakers as my highs over the growlers! Yea, yea, yea, I know they were a 3-way speaker with an 18wat was I thinking but hey, I had to make do with what I had. Then I get a call from Jeff tellin me he has a new speaker coming out called the triple 12. I was interested but never got around to hearing them plus I was still BROKElol. Come 2008, I hear about Jeff and his newly designed triple 8 speakers! I said hmmmm, those prolly cant keep up with my 4 growlers center clustered but, whatever, ill go check them out at his shop. So Jeff did a small demo with the triple 8 (even tho I wanted to hear the triple 12) and I was BLOWN away. I was really amazed at how loud they got and how they did start to break up in clarity even on a Lab Gruppen 7000 clipping!!! But being the great guy Jeff is, he let me demo the speakers at an event I had to do. The venue was a gym but I had played there several times before with my old setup of 4 growlers center clustered with the SR 4738s serving as the highs for the night. Upon setting up my rig, immediately people were the promoter asked where the JBLs were. I told him that I was tryin something new this time and he was skeptical cause the triple 8s were so small in size. But when they came to life, all you saw was a big smile on his face! Ear to ear and he commented, dont tell me the same guy that made your subs makes this speaker too I replied YES thats him! (I guess the JTR logo gave it awayhehe) Anyway, as more people filed in, about 400-500 total, and the music got louder, I got nothing but compliments on the sound. I felt like I was a sound reinforcement guy at a show. Once again, I SMILED from ear to ear and told myself that I had to find a way to buy these from Jeff cause not only did the sound waaayyy better than the JBLs but they were also 50lbs!!! and space savers! Again, I was SOLD! My back definitely is happy with the outcome as well!! LOL. Anyway, that is my experience with JTR speakers! I know have a full system and I cant go back in any other direction! Jeff is a scientist that REALLY knows what he is doing and to me he puts the competition to rest, I mean, I even have DJ buddies asking to rent my system. To all djs if you are looking for a compact system that ROCKS and is pretty darn efficient.JTR Triple 8s/Growler combo is the way to go!

I also can demo for anyone that is skeptical like I was about JTR!

Btw: I think ill get another pair of growlers or 2.lol. its like a disease now!

Forum: Pro Audio

<! -->
Ok, I guess this is the place where I can be an unabashed fanboy of the JTR products. I have been tweaking the system (Audyssey and my Velo SMS-1) for a week since the install of the Captivators.

Last night, we re-watched Knowing in Bluray. This movie has some of the most incredible sound track (DTS HDMA) dynamics I have heard and the speakers and subs had my SO literally jumping out of her chair. My system is calibrated @ 75db via my Integras test tones and was playing @ an MV of -6. In theory, this should be 6db under reference volume. I didnt get out the SPL meter (I will today) but my guess is that from normal levels in the 80db range, the peak SPL was easily 120db and the system was just coasting.

I absolutely hate hyperbole and gloating and while I still have some work to do on the sub integration and room acoustics to tweak out a bit more SQ/refinement, these speakers and subs are easily the best investment I have made in my Home Theater.

They are really something special.

Forum: Home Theater

Video of people's reactions to 6 JTR Growlers!

I did a party at a local college in the gymnasium (the length of 2 basketball courts) with all JTR speakers. Jeff brought out 2 triple 8's and an extra 2 Growlers to my 4. Jeff and I were equally impressed by the impact these speakers had at the back of the room with a room full of people and little extra headroom to spare. Jeff told me that he's never used JUST 6 growlers in a gym that big. He said usually, there would be about 12. I guess big things do come in small packages lol. Anyway, here is a video of me recording people's facial reactions to hearing them for the first time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPxAPwotA8Y&feature=channel_page

Forum: Pro Audio

2010 Triple 8 review

My initial impressions of the Triple 8's.

First some background information on the room and setup:

It is a one car garage that has been almost completely converted over for home theater use apart from some storage against the door at that back of the theater.

I have 3 Triple 8's placed vertically below my front projector screen. I moved the coaxial to the to the top position. (It was not too hard. It just required a couple of Allen wrenches.) They fit perfectly below the screen in front of my 26" tall acoustic panels. This places the center of the coaxial approximately 27" off of the floor due to the cement riser built into the floor at the front of the room, and approximately 5 below the bottom of the picture. My ear height is approximately 30" off the ground when fully reclined so this is not too bad.

I have 9 2' by 4' acoustic panels in the 1700 cubic foot room. Two 2" thick panels below the screen behind my main speakers, two 4" thick panels in the upper front corner, two 4" thick panels on the side walls, one 4" thick panel at an upper side corner and two 6" thick panels on the back wall.

Each Triple 8" is being powered by a single channel of an Audiosource Amp 300 rated at 235 watts into 4 ohms. I am using an Onkyo TX-NR905 as a preamp and I ran Audyssey prior to my initial listening tests.

I am using my old left and right (DIY Vifa MTM's Vifa XT25 Dual, Concentric Dome Ring Radiator tweeter and two Vifa PL18 7" woofers with an 8" rear mounted Seas passive radiator) for side surrounds and my old side surrounds (Madisound Vifa Studio kit speakers, Same tweeter with a Vifa PL14 5.5" woofer with a 6" rear mounted Seas passive radiator) for rear surrounds. (My old center was also a Vifa Studio.)

I am using a NHT1259 based sub in a sealed 3 cubic foot, DIY box with a 250 watt amplifier. (Kit purchased from Madisound several years ago.)

My own background:

I have used lower end home theater speakers in the past (top of the line Cambridge Soundworks), and since the current upgrade is from DIY speakers, I can not say that I am by any means an expert in high end sound, but I have been an enthusiast for a while.

Now my impressions of the Speakers:

Aesthetics:

I think the speakers look awesome. I ordered them with Speakon connections and steel grills to protect them from my 21 month old daughter. Jeff called them the Triple 8 CR (Child Resistant) model. I really like the look of the steel grills. I think I like it even better than the look of the fabric grills. of course my speakers are in the garage, I have different tastes than most, and I have been ogling RMK!'s system on the forums for months. By the way, wiring up 4 by 12 gauge wire into the Speakon connectors, was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I am glad I bought the CR model, because during my first listening session my daughter was already pulling on the wires in the back and pushing on the grills. The fabric grills on my old left and right have a couple of holes in them from her.

Calibration and sound:

My old left and right were calibrated at +6. These are to my ears, very good sounding speakers. They sounded considerably better than my Madisound Vifa Studio Kit speakers, likely due to the better bass handling of two 7" woofers versus one 5.5" woofer. However, they are horribly inefficient.

Two of Triple 8's were calibrated at -12 and one was calibrated at -11.5 by Audyssey. I was worried that they may need to be adjusted even lower, because -12 is the lower limit for Audyssey. However, I double checked the measurements with a tripod mounted Radioshack SPL meter and the levels were spot on. That 18 db change in sensitivity from my old speakers to the Triple 8's has got to be a big deal. My receiver and then later, my amps, were probably struggling to provide the SPL I was asking for with the old speakers.

Everyone knows that these speakers can go loud. So I thought I would first focus on their ability to play the tiny details with the volume down.

The biggest thing I have noticed is that I can hear the quietest detail in a movie and can hear every word that is spoken without having to crank the volume up. The ability of these speakers to reproduce dialog is amazing. My wife's biggest complaint about my old system was that I always wanted the volume louder than she did, which I think was because it was relatively difficult to understand the dialog at low levels. I think my old system also distorted quite a bit at higher volumes and sounded louder than it should have.

With respect to music, the Triple 8's have sounded great with everything from Classical to Heavy Metal. I need to spend some more time listening to music with them.

My wife and I went into one of the higher end local home theater stores a couple of days ago while waiting to meet some friends for dinner and heard a demonstration of some Paradigm speakers with the gunfight scene from Open Range. They sounded very good. We rented Open Range and played the gunfight scene at about -20 db with the Triple 8's and we were able to hear all the details that the salesman at the home theater store was pointing out with the Paradigms even though we had the volume considerably lower than he did.

We watched it a second time with the volume up and although it sounded good, my wife asked me if I had "late night" turned on. I turned off Audyssey and the dynamics seemed to improve greatly. In fact, with Audyssey on, my wife said that she thought the Paradigms sounded better. With it off she agreed that the JTR's sounded better. I think she was referring to the impact of the gunshots in the scene. On or off the dialog and small details sounded great. I will have to do some more AB testing to be sure, but I think I will leave Audyssey off and get some sort of separate subwoofer EQ.

Our final listen to the scene was with the volume at approximately -5 db. With my old speakers, my wife never let me turn the volume above around -14 db. However, at -5 the Triple 8's just sounded good and not at all too loud. My wife felt the same way. I imagine this is due to the lower distortion and the fact that neither the amps or the speakers are operating at anywhere near their limits.

It is now clear that my old speakers were straining or too much was being asked of my amps. I do not think that I have ever heard speakers that could operate at these levels and sound so clean. I am really looking forward to watching more movies in my theater.

Forum: Home Theater

JTR OWNER Audition List

Hi Jeff,

Since JTR is still gathering customers and many times future customers are looking for a place to hear JTR, I have found a "sticky" called an Owners Audition List is usefull.

This is for JTR owners who are willing to share their systems with others who want to "join the JTR club".

So all the owner does is post their City, State and speakers they have, and then if someone wants to get to gether and hear them they PM them.

NO ONE SHOULD POST THEIR ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER

I use this style of casual get togethers with other equipment and it works well and even good friendships of the like minded are made.

Forum: Home Theater

Arrival of new style Triple 8Ms

Jeff talked me into switching my Triple 8X speaker order to the new style (as of 8/2009) Triple 8M speaker. I think it was a smart move. Not only will these serve me as small FOH mains over a Growler, they also can be laid down on their sides as monitors, and with their mirror image configuration they can be doubled up for auditory challenged musicians. With their small footprint, usage as delays and front fills is not out of the question either.

First impression is how solidly they are built and how tightly the drivers are grouped, This can only be good for coherence compared to a typical woofer/horn configuration, especially since the mids/highs are a coaxial driver. They weigh 50#s, its a condensed 50#s in a somewhat small package. They feel good, solid.

Dual NL4 connectors are on one end. The steel pole socket is ribbed so the pole doesn't bind/stick when removing. Integrated handle on the top. Being 6'4" they are easy for me to pick up (they are 26" tall).

By default the coaxial MF/HF driver is mounted in the top position. Calculations show that the three 8" drivers have almost the same area as a single 15, but obviously divided up between 3 VCs, and 2 frequency ranges - lows and mids.

These are delivered as a mirrored pair, so when ordering covers (like Tuki) let Gary know that they are such - he will flip one of the tops to adapt it to the mirrored angles.

Although I have not put them through their paces sonically - as I dont have a small room gig for for a few weeks - they do sound very clear and crisp with tight lows with recorded music played through them. Im really not use to the highs being this clear, even compared to the EV QRx212s. I hope to be able to run SMAART on them in the near future to give you guys some real data.

Amp power will be a PL236. The 8M power rating is 1200W, a good match. I strive for dynamics and headroom in my systems/mixes, so they will never see anything near full power.

Now after having these in my hands I am considering the 8M as the possible solution to monitor upgrade. They are definitely the right size and weight, but sea trials and opinions from the players will be the deciding factor.

I apologize for not having any practical use of these in the trenches, I just dont have any gigs for them at the moment.

-Mike

Photos here:

http://www.piscessound.com/images/jtr/jtr_8m_1.jpg

http://www.piscessound.com/images/jtr/jtr_8m_2.jpg

http://www.piscessound.com/images/jtr/jtr_8m_3.jpg

http://www.piscessound.com/images/jtr/jtr_8m_4.jpg

http://www.piscessound.com/images/jtr/jtr_8m_5.jpg

Forum: Pro Audio
